I love these shoes!

Pros

  • Durable
  • Light Weight
  • Plenty of cushion

Cons

  • They Look A Little Clunky

Best Uses

  • All Distances
  • Great Training Shoe

This shoe has an enormous amount of cushioning with minimal weight. I'm about to turn 50 and weigh 150 lbs. I run 2 - 3 marathons a year with shorter races mixed in during the year. These shoes have really made a difference in joint pain. I was running in Brooks PureFlow and PureConnect prior to running in the Hokas. I'm now on my second pair and rotate them between runs. Some of my fellow runners call them my "old man" shoes, but looks aren't everything!

So good, I bought a pair for my daughter

I have a little plantar fascia problem but I think I caught it on the early side. Plenty of stretching and the Clifton's are helping. I run 5k, 8k and 10k. I run about 12 miles per week. I liked them so much I bought a pair for my daughter. She has some knee problems so I think this will help. They're comfortable right out of the box. We ran a 10k on Thanksgiving and we both agreed they were great. My legs felt fine the next day.

The good, the bad and the ugly

I am a heavy runner at roughly 6 feet tall and 200 pounds who has experienced some knee pain while training for and running a half marathon. I have several full and half marathons under my belt, but those all took place about 30 pounds ago, so running in less cushioned shoes ended in a good deal of pain. I took a few weeks off after the race and went back to RR to look for something more protective, but with the caveat of still wanting something light.

I tried several different shoes and ultimately landed on the Clifton for several reasons.

          1. The shoe is tremendously cushioned and has a great feel as you move through your stride. The foot sits down into the shoe a bit, so the very large outsole is a bit deceiving. Despite all the protection in the shoe I find myself actually being more encouraged to achieve a midfoot to forefoot strike as opposed to heel striking.

          2. The weight is otherworldly...in a good way. Given the level of cushioning and protection it mind blowing to pick them up. It seriously feels as though you are picking up a pair of socks.

          3. The fit takes a little getting used to, but ultimately is great. The toe box has the potential to be on the tight side, and I've found that putting my full weight on my foot when lacing them up is best to let my toes spread naturally without the shoe being too loose.

That said, there are a couple of notable negatives that keep this shoe from being a perfect 5 stars.

          1. The tongue of the shoe is very thin and stays out of the way, but this does come at the cost of some protection from the laces. Look out for hot spots if you tie your shoes up tightly. The top of the tongue also tends to bunch up quite a bit.

          2. I question the durability of the sole. After only a few runs I am already noticing wear marks. There is almost no rubber on the bottom of the shoe which does help a lot with the weight, but comes at a price.

          3. The styling is ugly. There is no way around it, the shoe looks terrible. Ultimately the tremendous feel and fit more than compensates, but better design would go a long way.

Ultimately this is a tremendous shoe, but there are a couple of minor things that need tweaking to be absolutely perfect. Regardless of the small tweaks needed, this is absolutely a shoe that should be considered for anybody who wants cushion without sacrificing speed.

I was nervous about switching brands of shoes to some new brand-I'm brand loyal. I have a need for increased cushioning as I am in my late 50's and have been running since 1973. This shoe is comfortable, stable, light, responsive and cushioned extremely well. I've only had them for about 2 weeks but they required zero 'getting used to days.'. I now run low mileages at about 25-35 miles per week.

I am a huge fan of Hoka! Without the superior cushioning that most models have, I may not even be running anymore due to my knee problems. Hoka's have kept me in the game! I do like trying all Hoka models to see which ones are best for me. I recently bought and ran in the Clifton. There is a lot less shoe with the Clifton compared to other models. Obviously this makes the shoe weigh less and there is also a price drop as well. I feel this is a high quality shoe for an efficient and light runner that does not need the heavy cushioning like in the Bondi 3. I do believe this shoe would be a excellent speed work or race shoe for many runners, just not for me for the long haul.

These are easily my new favorite shoes. I have already broken them in and PR'd a marathon. I am a very loyal Hoka customer and have worn several types. These are extremely lightweight even for Hokas. I aim to get a new PR in the same pair in a few weeks. This pair will eventually be replaced with a new pair of Clifton's. Love this shoe.

71 yr old guy, 5'10" 145-150 pounds with 38 1/2 years of "serious" running, best shoe for me since the early 80's and the Nike Terra TC. I still run 40-50 road miles a week and over the last several years I have been feeling the road more than ever. Probably nothing to do with my nearly 81,000 miles run. My oldest daughter(50) runs and recommended the Hoka brand. The Clifton was like a dream shoe for me. Light weight and superior cushioning. Got the shoes Thurs eve, ran 8 miles in them on Fri, 11 miles Sat and 12 today. I am impressed. The shoes have just worked. Running downhill is "fun" again. With the same effort my pace has increased a little . They appeared at the right time, I plan on running a 50K road ultra in December. Thanks Hoka. Remember, there is no finish line.

Seriously...this shoe is great for everything (except maybe trail running.) Why would you need anything else? With the ultra light weight this shoe offers and the cushion for any distance this shoe is one stop shopping. I have searched for years to find a shoe that offers built in arch support for someone with high arches. I am a neutral high cadence runner and have had some battles with plantar fasciitis. I have tried multiple insoles and they just made the shoe heavier and less comfortable (i.e. harder, less cushion.) Even custom molded insoles didn't give me the arch support I needed.

In this shoe, your foot actually goes down INTO the footbed of the shoe and the molded cushion fits my foot gloriously. I can loosely lace the shoes and it literally feels like I have nothing on.

Highly recommend and I think I have found my permanent shoe. They just need help in the aesthetics department...these colors are BAD!

I had heel pain and planter issues, I read about these shoes, but they did not make them in wide widths. I bought them a half size larger out of desperation. They saved my running career. They are the best shoe I have ever worn, except they dont make then for a wider foot.

I run nearly every day ranging from 3K to 8K. As a senior with degenerative disc disease, I must have serious cushioning in my shoes. A friend turned me on to Hoka one one's and the Cliftons filled the bill for my specific needs. They are also amazingly lightweight. The only potential drawback that I solved with thicker socks and inserts is that they run a bit wide. Other than that the most comfortable shoe that I have used in the past thirty years.

Love this shoe. Extreme cushioning, lightweight and fast. feels as though they push me forward as I run. I've gained 1 minute or better per mile since running in them. Only drawback that I can foresee is the rubber sole seams to be wearing out at the heel. I've been running in them for about a little over six weeks and 160 miles. Would like to get at least 4/6 months or 400/600 miles out of them but not sure that I can. I still though will probably stay with this brand.

I never heard of Hokas until a friend stated he had run 18 miles in his and felt really good the next day. The comment caught my attention, so I decided to buy these shoes. I wore them for a brief 3 mile track workout and they felt really nice. I then took them to Chicago to run the marathon and I must say, they kept me going. Very comfortable shoe, lightweight, cushioned perfectly for my liking. I have run 8 marathons to date and will never run another one without my Hokas.

Older and Heavier Male, by running standards. Not a serious runner until about 5 years ago. Took some trial and error to find my shoe "type" and a brand that I could tolerate. Wore out more than a few pair of Asics and I am ECSTATIC over this shoe! Could have taken off and ran until I couldn't run any more straight out of the box. SO LIGHT and a great cushion gave me a level of comfort I have never experienced before. If they last 200 miles, I'm a customer for life! That is, as long as they don't ruin them in revision.

I purchased these at the same time I purchased a pair of Hoka One One Huakas, and fortunately tried the Clifton first. Wonderful shoe, felt great as soon as I put it on and that didn't stop throughout my regular 5.29 mile run. I was really impressed with the cushioning and the fact that it never got in the way as well as the lightness. Just a super shoe that I knew I'd be wearing frequently. I'll probably put them in rotation with my Newtons, Distance, Gravity, and Isaacs but I know which will be the most comfortable! First Hokas, but they won't be my last.
I run on hard surfaces primarily and am 68 years old; normally 100-125 miles per month, and I wanted something with a little more cushion to see if it would help with some knee pain; not bad, but noticeable nonetheless, and I'm sure the Clifton will do that for me without any loss of form. They're easy to run in and I haven't had to accommodate them in any way.
I wrote another review on the Huaka, which was very unfavorable. I was very disappointed especially after my initial impression of the Cliftons. I returned the Huaka after wearing just once. Very different shoes, at least to me.

This shoe was recommended by my Ultra running friend. I'm a 54 year old male weighing 80Kg with the standard aches and pains, knees, hips, feet, plus lower leg neuropathy. Currently stationed in Kuwait, I did about 3 miles in the shoes before running the Army 10-Miler Shadow run last Sunday. Truly unbelieveable comfort resulting in pain free speed. I would not have believed anyone could build a shoe that comfortable! If it lasts 200 miles, I will be a lifelong customer...so long Asics!

Incredible for a shoe to have this much cushion and still retain very good responsiveness. Great for everything from tempo workouts to racing a marathon. First time Hoka buyer and I am quite impressed, still felt like a regular shoe despite the looks. Only issue was a somewhat loose fit in forefoot, swapped insoles and problem fixed. Got two pairs to rotate and will be racing my next marathon in this shoe.

I've had my Cliftons for two weeks and have enough miles to put down some initial impressions.

For background, I am 5'10" and 150 pounds - I have been running for over 30 years. I run mostly trails, and train at a 5:30-6:00 pace. I prefer short to middle distance running (3-5 miles) at a faster pace. I have been running in trail shoes for about 20 years - I like the stability, traction, and cushioning, and prefer to run off road for my shins and joints.

Back in December of 13 I tried a pair of Hoka Stinson Trails. They were AMAZING. Hands down the best shoes I have ever run in. So, of course, they discontinued the model. I tried the Hoka Stinson ATRs and they were not up to par. I also tried the Mafate Speed trail shoes and HATED them. I even tried the Altra Olympus and hated them as well. At that point I sadly gave up on Hokas and returned to my old stand by Salomons. About 3 weeks ago a fellow runner showed me her Cliftons and I was blown away by how light they were. I hadn't heard of the Cliftons and was intrigued so I did some reading and was impressed with all the reviews and the Runner's World shoe of the year designation. Given their pretty reasonable price I thought I'd give them a try.

After about 20 miles in them I really love these shoes. So far they are living up to all the hype - feather light, wonderful cushioning, good responsive sole and amazing stability for a shoe this light. I do run with them on light gravel and grass and have had no issues. The soles will just not handle an aggressive trail - the tread isn't there unfortunately. I have read that Hoka plans to make a Clifton trail shoe - if so, I'm in!

The shoes fit like Hokas, a bit snug, but I think a shoe like this has to be snug. They aren't tight, they form around your feet. I have had no issues with soreness, fatigue, or tingling in these shoes.

My overall impression is that these could be on par with my beloved Stinson Trails - I love these shoes. As fast trainers they have no equal. I only gave them 4 stars because I haven't had them long enough to see how they wear. So far they are perfect, but 20 miles isn't enough to get any real sense of how far they will go.

I will finish by saying that I look forward to every run in these shoes - sort of look for an excuse to put them on. They are extremely comfortable and they perform - I am training down towards 5:00 to 5:30 in these which at my age is blistering, a large part of it has to do with these shoes. I like to run fast, and so do these shoes, so we are a perfect match!

I'm currently training for an Ironman and have gotten up to a 22 mile run with these shoes and no ill effects! They are comfortable, roomy and provide a lot of cushioning...especially on hard surface roads. I also run on a golf course to give my knees some relief and that is when I find the cushioning a little excessive. I've experimented with several other brands and found my Hokas to be the best choice for me.

Love the cushion and smooth ride. Durability seems better than the Bondi 3 as the tread isn't wearing down as fast. The Clifton breathes better, is lighter and more stylish too. Compared to the Bondi 3, the Clifton is much more flexible, has less material on the upper and it fit my foot better. I did notice a significant difference in the arch support and stability of the heel. This isn't a good thing for me as I need a stability shoe to help with my PF. This shoe actually made it flare up again with only 20 miles into them over several days. I will be reluctantly returning them since I need more arch support. I have enjoyed the other improvements from the Bondi 3 and wish the shoe worked for me. I was able to wear them with jeans and felt comfortable knowing they didn't look like clown shoes. I would never wear the Bondi unless I was running.

I've been running in Saucony Kinvara's for several years and have loved them. I got a pair of Saucony Guide 7's in the spring, and really liked the additional cushioning they had over the Kinvara's. But I liked the more minimal upper and the lower drop of the Kinvara. The Hoka One One Clifton is the best of both worlds! It has more cushioning than my Guide's, but the upper is more minimal like the Kinvara. The drop is also more similar to the drop of the Kinvara's. They feel just as light as the Kinvara. I'm currently training for a fall marathon, and did an 18 miler in the Hoka's today, and they were great. My legs don't feel as fatigued after the run as they have in the past, I assume it's the additional cushioning lessening the impact and force on the muscles. They feel just as stable as any other shoe I have worn (I had been nervous about this due to the height off the ground). The forefoot is nice and roomy, but not excessively so. I have only done two runs in them so far, but I'm very pleased and look forward to many more runs in them. I'll probably run the marathon in them, too!
